Geauga Hunger Task Force's Pantry of the Month

May 17, 2019

The pantry at Newbury United Community Church, open twice a week, serves about 50 families each month. Pantry Captain Kathy Shanholtzer has been involved with the Newbury location for about 10 years; the last three she has served as Pantry Coordinator. Her desire to give back led Kathy to expand her service from membership in the Kiwanis Club to volunteering at the food pantry.  Kathy has retired from this wonderful service and the new captain is Becky Long.

Kathy has truly enjoyed serving food insecure residents and working with wonderful volunteers from Middlefield Bank (her place of employment), Metzenbaum Sheltered Industries, Newbury High School wrestlers, and members of the congregation at Newbury United Community Church.  Under her leadership the pantry maintains an inventory of non-perishable foods, as well as fresh meat, cheese, milk, eggs and other foods.  The Geauga Hunger Task Force, Cleveland Food Bank, local farmers and merchants, church members and local collections provide the majority of the food.   As she retires, Kathy can rest assured that her service has been appreciated by the county residents whom she has fed and cared for so generously.
